Ponniyin selvan – Fiction movie based on novel


  • This film is created based on the famous Tamil novel Ponniyin selvan and directed by Mr. Maniratnam.

  • That novel is a fiction story based on historical events among Chola dynasty in Tamilnadu and written by Kalki ramamoorthy. 

  • Before that novel – published as – serialized weekly magazine – 1950

  • A film adaptation of Ponniyin selvan novel was attempted by kamala Haasan and MGR and but it was unsuccessful.

    • Second image is about the promotion of this film with addressing the distributors from world wide countries. They addressed their group of distributors as each posts for each distributor. 


    • They posted these advertisements or promo as animated video in twitter account of Lyca productions. Lyca production is one of the production company along with Madras talkies for this movie.  

    • After the release 


      • This movie got collection in box office almost 500 crore gross among worldwide. 

      • 266 crore in Tamilnadu only – November Statistic 

      • 314 crore in India includes Tamilnadu. ( other states of India gave 48 crore )

      • 186 crore grossed among world wide except India. 

      • Peoples have been watching this film with the family where I saw in Thiruvarur and Chennai. 

      • Theatres were showed the board as houseful for the first 3 days even online booking platforms.

      III. Audiences came to theatre, changed themselves as a characters to watch the film.

    IV. People were creating memes for their life events with the dialogues and shot of the film. It’s not a relevant to translate in English.  


  • VI. We have to see in that cutout, some photos of the fans were fixed. They celebrated this movie as their artwork for their happiness. They were pouring the milk on the cutout, record this event and post it in their social media accounts. 


    This is helps to the makers of the movie to happy for promoted without any payment. Also the makers will post it in their accounts for promotion of their film and make fans happy. 


    Maximum this type of celebration is being celebrated only for famous hero’s film and big budget commercial film. 

    They formed a fans clubs for particular hero to celebrate every movie of themselves. 

    Example, Vijay fans club, Chiyan vikram fans club, Oviya army.



  • According to Henry Jenkins, these activities like memes and posters were termed as fan’s culture. They recreated the scenes as memes with their life phenomena which is suitable with the scene. Then, they posted in their Whatsapp status to make fun with their friends.

  • This image shows them superiority with the district where the writer of the novel was born. The Poster is pasted on the wall in the Mayiladuthurai district in Tamilnadu. After this is re-created as meme and shared in their Facebook account for their superiority.

  • If we see in the reels, important scenes has took from the movie and post it as reels (HD) after that movie is released in OTT platforms. 


  • Some peoples were did photoshoot with the get up of the characters in the movie and share it in their social media accounts.


Some peoples were doing own acted reels with the audio clip of the movie and make them as a social media celebrity. 

It has been become a viral with the hashtags #ponniyinselvan. 


So, the term mass culture replaced with the Cultural industry. 

cultural industry have been creates a feeling in the consumers that media is adapted to people’s own need. 




Because, culture that arises spontaneously from the masses, the contemporary form of popular arts. Example: IV th picture (cutout of Raja raja chozha-I ).
